What Is ev.energy?

ev.energy is a smart electric-vehicle charging platform designed to help drivers charge at cheaper, greener and more useful times.

The service connects to a compatible electric vehicle or home charger. After you tell the app when you need your car ready, ev.energy can schedule charging during suitable periods rather than beginning the moment the vehicle is plugged in.

Its scheduling considers factors such as:

  • Your required ready-by time
  • Your electricity tariff
  • Available off-peak periods
  • Electricity prices
  • Carbon intensity
  • Conditions on the electricity grid
  • Participation in flexibility markets

The aim is to make home charging easier while shifting demand away from the busiest periods.

The ev.energy support centre explains that the system considers the driver’s ready-by time, energy tariff and grid carbon intensity when creating a charging schedule.

What Is ev.energy Charge & Earn?

Charge & Earn is ev.energy’s Great Britain programme that pays participating EV drivers for allowing their home charging to be scheduled intelligently.

You still plug your vehicle in at home as usual. However, instead of charging immediately, ev.energy selects when the qualifying charging session takes place within the period available before your chosen ready-by time.

By moving charging to times when the electricity system benefits from additional flexibility, ev.energy can participate in grid and energy markets. Revenue generated through that activity is placed into a monthly pool and shared with participating drivers.

In simple terms:

  1. You plug in your EV at home.
  2. Smart charging remains enabled.
  3. You tell the app when the vehicle needs to be ready.
  4. ev.energy schedules the charging session.
  5. A session delivering at least 7 kWh becomes eligible.
  6. Grid-market revenue is pooled each month.
  7. Your payment is calculated using your number of eligible charges.

Charge & Earn is free to join. There is no subscription, special paid membership or joining fee.

The Difference Between the £25 Referral Bonus and Charging Earnings

There are two separate ways to receive money through this offer.

RewardHow it worksWhen it is paid
£25 referral rewardJoin using FAI588 and complete your first eligible chargeAt the start of the following month
Ongoing Charge & Earn paymentsComplete eligible smart charges throughout the monthAfter the energy market settles, potentially up to two months after the earning month

The £25 referral reward is fixed. The normal amount paid for each ongoing eligible charge is variable.

For example, if your first eligible charge is completed in October, the £25 referral reward should be paid at the start of November, subject to the programme conditions and successful account verification.

Your separate earnings for October’s smart-charging sessions may arrive later because the grid-market results must first be reconciled.

How to Claim the £25 ev.energy Referral Reward

Step 1: Open the referral link

Begin your registration through:

https://earn.ev.energy/r/FAI588

This referral link includes code FAI588 and should attach it to your Charge & Earn registration.

Step 2: Create your Charge & Earn account

Follow the registration instructions and provide accurate information about:

  • Your name and contact details
  • Your home charging address
  • Your electric vehicle
  • Your home charger, if applicable
  • Your electricity supplier
  • Your current electricity tariff
  • Your smart meter

Registration is free and is described by ev.energy as taking approximately two minutes, although connecting your vehicle or charger may require additional steps.

Step 3: Download or open the ev.energy app

Charge & Earn is managed through the ev.energy app. After creating your account, sign in to the app and connect your compatible vehicle or home charger.

Step 4: Complete the connection process

ev.energy needs a reliable connection to either your car or charger so that it can detect, schedule and measure charging sessions.

Depending on your hardware, you may be asked to:

  • Select the vehicle or charger brand
  • Sign in to the relevant manufacturer account
  • Grant the required connection permissions
  • Select your electricity supplier
  • Confirm your tariff
  • Enter your home charging details
  • Confirm that you have a working smart meter

Step 5: Add your payment details

Charge & Earn payments are currently sent through PayPal. Add your PayPal details in the ev.energy app so that your referral reward and ongoing charging earnings can be paid.

Check that the email address or account information is correct.

Step 6: Enable smart charging

Open the Smart section of the app and switch smart charging on.

You can then set a ready-by time. This tells ev.energy when your vehicle must have completed its scheduled charging.

The app allows users to create different ready-by times for different days. It can also restrict charging to off-peak periods or apply a price limit on compatible dynamic tariffs.

Step 7: Plug your vehicle in at home

Connect your vehicle to your home charger as normal. Leave smart charging enabled and allow ev.energy to control the timing of the session.

Step 8: Complete an eligible charge of at least 7 kWh

Your first qualifying session must:

  • Take place at your registered home address
  • Be managed by ev.energy
  • Have smart charging enabled
  • Deliver at least 7 kWh
  • Use compatible connected hardware
  • Comply with the programme rules
  • Not be started using the manual Boost option

Step 9: Check that the session has been counted

The app should display your eligible-charge activity and incentive information.

If the session does not appear immediately, allow time for the vehicle, charger and smart-meter data to be processed.

Step 10: Receive the £25 reward

Once your first eligible charge has been confirmed, the £25 referral reward should be paid at the start of the following month.

The referrer also receives £25 after the referred driver completes the qualifying charge.

What Counts as an Eligible Charge?

For Charge & Earn, an eligible charge is a smart-managed home charging session delivering at least 7 kWh.

The following conditions apply:

Charging activityEligible?
Home charge managed by ev.energyYes
Smart charging switched onYes
At least 7 kWh deliveredYes
First qualifying session after joining through FAI588Triggers the referral reward
Manual Boost or “charge now” sessionNo
Charge delivering less than 7 kWhNo
Public rapid-charging sessionNo
Workplace charging sessionNo
Charging not visible to ev.energyNo
More than one qualifying charge on the same dayOnly one counts
Charging while enrolled in another flexibility schemeNo

You can earn from a maximum of one eligible session per day, capped at 31 eligible sessions in a calendar month.

Why Does a Charge Need to Be at Least 7 kWh?

The programme rewards drivers for providing useful flexibility to the electricity grid.

A very short charging session may not provide enough controllable energy to create meaningful grid value. Setting a 7 kWh minimum ensures each counted session provides a sufficient amount of flexible charging.

For context, 7 kWh may provide roughly 20 to 30 miles of driving range, depending on:

  • The vehicle
  • Weather conditions
  • Driving efficiency
  • Road type
  • Heating or air-conditioning use
  • Battery temperature

The exact range added is not part of the referral qualification. The important condition is that the eligible session delivers at least 7 kWh.

Why Does a Boost Charge Not Count?

The Boost option tells ev.energy to begin charging immediately.

Boost is useful when you need the car sooner than expected, but it removes ev.energy’s ability to choose a valuable charging period. Because ev.energy cannot shift that session around grid conditions, a Boost charge does not count towards Charge & Earn.

You remain free to use Boost whenever necessary. Using it does not automatically remove you from the programme; that particular session simply will not earn a payment or trigger the referral reward.

After the Boost has finished, the app can return to its normal smart-charging mode.

Who Can Join Charge & Earn?

To participate, you generally need all of the following:

A compatible electric vehicle or home charger

ev.energy must be able to connect to either your EV or your home charging unit.

A special Charge & Earn charger is not required. If your vehicle itself is supported, ev.energy may be able to manage charging through the vehicle connection.

The programme currently supports many major EV and home-charger brands, including examples such as:

  • Tesla
  • BMW
  • Volkswagen
  • Easee
  • Wallbox

Compatibility changes as manufacturers, software connections and supported models are updated. Check the current ev.energy compatibility list before registering.

A home charging address in Great Britain

The Charge & Earn programme covered here is for drivers with a registered home charging address in Great Britain.

Home charging is required. Public and workplace charging sessions do not count.

A working smart meter

You must have a working smart meter installed at the registered home address.

The programme does not require you to be on half-hourly settlement. According to the current Charge & Earn information, any working compatible smart meter can satisfy this requirement.

If you do not yet have a smart meter, contact your electricity supplier to ask about installation.

An eligible energy tariff

Most standard and time-of-use tariffs can be compatible, provided the electricity supplier is not already directly controlling the vehicle’s charging and selling the same flexibility.

You must provide accurate supplier and tariff information when joining.

No competing smart-charging reward scheme

Your vehicle and charger cannot be enrolled in Charge & Earn while also participating in another flexibility, demand-response or smart-charging rewards programme.

The same charging flexibility cannot normally be sold through two schemes simultaneously.

Which Energy Tariffs Are Excluded?

At the time of writing, the Charge & Earn programme lists the following tariffs as excluded:

  • Intelligent Octopus Go
  • Octopus Intelligent Drive Pack
  • OVO Charge Anytime
  • E.ON Next Drive Smart
  • ScottishPower EV Optimise
  • British Gas FreeCharge

These tariffs are excluded because the energy supplier already controls the vehicle’s charging and uses that flexibility.

If you are on one of the excluded tariffs, you may still be able to use the standard ev.energy app, but you will not be eligible to earn through Charge & Earn while the tariff remains in control of your charging.

Tariff names and programme compatibility can change, so check the latest eligibility information before joining.

Can You Join with Any Electricity Supplier?

The programme is not restricted to one energy supplier.

You may be able to participate with any supplier provided:

  • Your tariff is not excluded
  • Your supplier does not already control the same EV charging
  • You have a working smart meter
  • Your vehicle or charger is supported
  • Your registered home is in Great Britain
  • You are not enrolled in another competing flexibility scheme

This makes Charge & Earn potentially accessible to EV drivers on standard tariffs, simple off-peak tariffs and various non-managed EV tariffs.

How Does ev.energy Decide When to Charge?

When smart charging is enabled, the app uses your settings and available charging window to build a schedule.

It looks at:

  1. When the car is plugged in
  2. How much energy the vehicle needs
  3. Your selected ready-by time
  4. Your electricity tariff
  5. Off-peak periods
  6. Grid conditions
  7. Carbon-intensity forecasts
  8. Opportunities to earn from energy-market flexibility

The system then selects charging periods that should complete the required charge before the ready-by time.

The ev.energy app is designed to prioritise cheaper and lower-carbon periods where possible while still meeting the requested schedule.

How Much Can You Earn from Charge & Earn?

The amount paid for normal eligible charges is not fixed.

Each month, ev.energy places a share of its grid-services trading revenue into a pool. That pool is divided by the total number of eligible charges completed by participating drivers.

Your payment is calculated broadly as:

Monthly rate per eligible charge × your number of eligible charges

The monthly rate can rise or fall depending on:

  • Grid-market revenue
  • Wholesale electricity conditions
  • Demand for flexibility
  • The number of participating drivers
  • The total number of eligible sessions
  • Market reconciliation results

Illustrative 2026 earnings

The official Charge & Earn page provides the following illustration for someone completing approximately three eligible charges each week:

MonthIllustrative amount per chargeApproximate monthly amount
January£1.01£13
February£0.89£12
March£1.15£15
April£1.03£13
May£1.30£17
June£1.34£17
July£1.42£18
August£1.63£21

ev.energy states that January to July are illustrative figures based on August’s rate and the relevant evening wholesale prices. August was the first paid month following the programme launch.

These figures are examples rather than guaranteed future returns. The rate can change every month.

The £25 referral bonus is separate from these variable charging earnings.

When Are Charge & Earn Payments Made?

Normal Charge & Earn payments are made monthly through PayPal, but they are not necessarily paid immediately after the end of the charging month.

Energy-market results take time to finalise. Your payment can therefore arrive up to two months after the month in which the eligible sessions were completed.

For example:

  • Eligible charges completed during August could be paid by the end of October.
  • Eligible charges completed during September could be paid by the end of November.

The exact amount and payment progress should be visible in the ev.energy app.

Referral payments are quicker

The £25 referral bonus follows a different timetable.

Once the referred driver completes their first eligible charge:

  • The new driver receives £25.
  • The referrer receives £25.
  • Payment is made at the start of the following month.

This means the referral payment can arrive before the driver’s normal Charge & Earn earnings for the same session.

What Happens if You Need the Car Immediately?

You remain in control.

If the smart schedule does not suit your immediate plans, open the app and select Boost. Charging should then begin without waiting for the scheduled period.

However:

  • The Boost session will not qualify for Charge & Earn.
  • A Boost session cannot trigger the £25 referral reward.
  • You will still pay your normal household electricity cost for charging.
  • The vehicle can return to smart charging for later sessions.

To claim the referral reward, make sure at least one session is left under ev.energy’s smart control and delivers at least 7 kWh.

Does Charge & Earn Make EV Charging Free?

No. You still pay your electricity supplier for the energy used to charge your vehicle.

Charge & Earn provides a separate payment for allowing ev.energy to control the timing of eligible charging sessions.

For example:

  • Your electricity supplier charges you for the electricity consumed.
  • ev.energy may schedule that electricity during cheaper periods.
  • Charge & Earn then pays you for qualifying charging flexibility.

Your overall saving may therefore come from two sources:

  1. Lower electricity prices from off-peak charging
  2. Charge & Earn payments for eligible sessions

The referral bonus adds a third one-off benefit for new participants using FAI588.

Is Charge & Earn Free?

Yes. The official programme information states that Charge & Earn is free to join.

There is:

  • No joining fee
  • No monthly subscription
  • No requirement to buy a dedicated charger
  • No charge for having a low-earning month
  • No penalty for occasionally using Boost
  • No clawback simply because future market rates fall

You still pay for the electricity used by your vehicle, and you remain responsible for any normal vehicle, charger, broadband or mobile-data costs.

What Information Does ev.energy Need?

To operate Charge & Earn, ev.energy needs information about your vehicle, charger, home electricity supply and charging activity.

This may include:

  • Your registered home charging address
  • Your Meter Point Administration Number or related meter identifier
  • Your electricity supplier
  • Your tariff
  • Vehicle or charger connection data
  • Charging start and finish times
  • Energy delivered
  • Smart-charging activity
  • Payment details
  • Eligibility information

The programme terms explain that some information is shared with relevant electricity-market and grid bodies, potentially including Elexon, the relevant Distribution System Operator and NESO, as well as ev.energy’s trading partner.

ev.energy’s support information explains that grid services can involve sharing address, meter and anonymised charging data with relevant operators and flexibility providers.

Read the current privacy policy and programme terms before enrolling.

The ev.energy App

The app is the central control panel for Charge & Earn.

You can use it to:

  • Connect a compatible EV or charger
  • Enable or disable smart charging
  • Set a ready-by time
  • Create different weekly schedules
  • Enter your electricity tariff
  • Restrict charging to off-peak periods
  • Set a price limit on supported tariffs
  • Start a manual Boost
  • View recent charging sessions
  • See how much energy was delivered
  • Track eligible Charge & Earn sessions
  • View the previous month’s rate
  • Monitor estimated earnings
  • Add or update PayPal payment details
  • Invite friends
  • Access your personal referral code

The app gives drivers control over when the vehicle must be ready while allowing ev.energy to optimise charging within that window.
